Six Smartphone Apps That Help Organize Your Life

Often, our smartphones are a major distraction rather than a tool that increases productivity. If we’re not refreshing our email inboxes, we’re scrolling through our Twitter feeds or – if we’re feeling particularly indulgent – trying to beat that last level of Candy Crush.  But our smartphones can be a valuable organizational tool. We just need the right apps!

I’ve rounded up six of the best smartphone apps to help you organize your life.

Evernote (Free)

Available on Android and iOS, Evernote is the ultimate productivity tool. You can use it to create voice reminders, to-do lists, take notes, and capture photos. The best part of this app is that it creates a completely searchable database that you can access from multiple devices. So whether you’re at home, the grocery store, or your office, everything you need is always at your fingertips.

Asana (Free/Premium subscription prices vary)

Asana functions as a task and project management app. It helps you keep track of project development, mark milestones, and separate different projects from one another. Asana is also particularly helpful if you work in collaborative environment, as you have the option to assign tasks to other team members.  While paid subscriptions are available, you can have up to five users on one account!

EasilyDo (Free)

Most of us could use a personal assistant to keep track of the little things that we always forget until the last minute. Evernote works as an automation machine and personal assistant, helping you to complete simple tasks quickly and efficiently. You sync up your online services, like Facebook, email and calendar, and EasilyDo will look for ways to help you without you having to ask! For example, it may suggest adding contact details to your address book from a recent email or notify you of an upcoming birthday and let you schedule a greeting in advance.

TeuxDeux ($2.99)

If you’re a goal setter, TeuxDeux is an invaluable app. It is basically a simple, pared down version of Evernote and acts as a to-do list. You can set goals for specific dates, or use the “someday” option to keep track of long-term goals. TeuxDeux is also available on Android and iOS.

Things ($10)

Strictly an iOS app, Things is the creation of productivity guru David Allen, and is based on his famous “Getting Things Done” productivity method.  If you need to take your to-do list to the next level (as in actually crossing off the items you put on it!), Things is the app for you.  You can separate daunting projects into easily achievable smaller tasks, group by category, and attach a time limit to each item on your to-do list. You can also input daily, weekly, monthly and yearly to-do lists into the app, on your computer or phone, and it will present you with a new checklist each morning.

Quickoffice ($14.99)

Have you ever been frustrated by your inability to open work files on your smartphone? Quickoffice is the solution. It allows you to open Microsoft Office documents and PDF’s, and is a cloud-storage service, so you can open documents on whichever devices you register. No need to carry your laptop with you everywhere when everything is accessible on your smartphone.  QuickBooks is more expensive than your typical app, so you have to decide whether it’s necessary for your day-to-day productivity.

Downloading any or all of these apps is sure to increase your productivity and transform your phone into an invaluable organizational tool for your business or personal life.
